Preventing Mold Issues in the Basement Starts with the Right Wall System

While a finished home basement can represent an ideal extension of living space, it’s important that any such home renovation is performed correctly. That’s because while these lower levels are ripe with potential, they also tend to be a source of problems—like moisture and mold. And if you finish your basement without accounting for these two variables, then you’re likely going to be paying for them down the line. In this article, we’ll explain why basements often present the ideal conditions for mold growth and how your remodel can preventatively address these issues before they have a chance to occur.

Ideal Conditions for Mold Growth

There’s an old saying when it comes to basements: “You’ve either got a basement that has leaked, is leaking or will leak.” Because basements are the lowest levels of the home, they’re often susceptible to water intrusion. And when there’s moisture and humidity, there’s the potential for mold growth too. In an unfinished basement, such issues, while not ideal, aren’t typically too big of an issue. However, if you’re experiencing issues in a finished basement, it can spell big trouble. Water can soak drywall and other building materials, and if these materials are not removed and replaced fast enough, mold growth is sure to follow. What’s more is if the source of the moisture isn’t addressed, the issue is just going to continue to persist.

And mold isn’t just unsightly and destructive, it can also take a toll on the health and well-being of any residents. Mold exposure is often linked to symptoms such as more intense allergic reactions, breathing problems, skin irritation, headaches and more. It’s why it’s all the more important to address any mold and moisture issues before you begin a home basement project. The Matrix Wall System can help. Let’s take a closer look at it.

The Solution: The Matrix Wall System

The Matrix Wall System is an alternative to conventional basement home renovation building materials in that, in addition to offering a stylish and energy efficient option, it also provides a vapor, moisture and thermal barrier to keep potential moisture problems at bay. Up to 300 percent stronger than conventional drywall or wood panels, the Matrix Wall System is mold and moisture resistant, and it still looks great and presents a wide range of decor options for any basement remodel project. It utilizes spray polyurethane foam, or SPF, to enhance insulation and essentially eliminate moisture intrusion. Here’s a closer look at the Matrix Wall System installation process:

How It Is Installed

Step 1: Framing

Rather than use conventional wood to frame the basement, the Matrix Wall System utilizes metal framing. This helps provide a more rigid and structurally sound foundation for any basement project.

Step 2: Spraying the Foam

After the basement is framed, any rough electrical or plumbing work will need to be performed before the SPF is sprayed between the metal studs. Following inspection of said work, the foam is sprayed in.

Step 3: Installing Purple Board

After the foam is sprayed and allowed to set, then Purple Board is installed. These Purple Boards are mold and mildew resistant, Green Guard certified and help reduce airborne dust up to 60 percent. This material will also not warp, bow or move like other building materials have a tendency to do. Following the Purple Board installation, seams are taped and finished, and primer is applied to the wall. Next, the walls are ready paint as the basement continues to come to life.

Lifetime Warranty

The Matrix Wall System is so effective that it comes with a lifetime warranty on labor and materials, helping homeowners gain peace of mind in knowing that they’re making the correct decision regarding their home basement project.
