Most families with young children always find themselves tripping over toys or constantly picking up toys and putting them back where they belong. Kids need their own space to run that extra energy off, and to create and play. If you have an unfinished basement then you have a secret goldmine when it comes to creating a solution for your kids’ play area. Consider finishing the basement, and you’ll be well on your way to having the perfect play space.

Firstly, if your basement needs to be finished give us a call and tell us your vision. We will help you design the perfect space, and take care of the rest. You can also use the following tips and apply them to your already finished basement. Let’s get an early start on planning the perfect kids’ play area!

FLOORING

Flooring is one of the most important things when it comes to the play area. Most parents want wall to wall carpet to help prevent bruising in case of falls. However, you may want to think about using individual squares of carpet so you can build a unique design. You may create a path or roadway for cars, or build in a hopscotch board on the floor with easy-to-use carpet tiles in varying colors. The best thing about carpet tiles is – if something gets spilled on them you can easily replace the tiles that have been affected, instead of having to replace carpet in the entire room.

STORAGE

Built in storage is one of the major perks of having a play area in the basement. We can build custom storage and shelving solutions for all the toys and craft supplies. You can also create activity corners in the room such as, designating one corner to become a reading area for quiet time. Use some built in shelves to organize all the books and make the shelving low so that the kids can easily pick out their favorite books.

LIGHTING

If you are able to put windows in the basement then we suggest doing so. Basements are great but having no natural light can put a damper on the environment. Having a window in your play area will allow some beautiful natural light to enter, and makes the environment happier.

Other lighting options include track lighting, recessed LED lights, traditional light fixtures, lamps, and task lighting. As you can see, your options are nearly unlimited, and in the end, your basement play area will be very well-lit. A well-lit play area will provide a much safer play environment for children.

FURNITURE

When considering furniture try to shop secondhand, and upcycle pieces as you can. Kids are known for accidents so knowing that you didn’t pay much for that table that is now covered with permanent marker will make you feel much better about painting it a solid color. Install padding on sharp corners to prevent serious injury.

OBSERVATION AREA

Adults can have their own space too! The purpose of finishing the basement to become a play area isn’t so the kids can be left alone in a relatively safe place. Children always need supervision, regardless of their play area. You can, however, create a place for adults to relax and watch the kids play. Place a sofa in the room facing the kid’s area and you can supervise them while watching TV or maybe catching up on laundry.
